Mars Cryobot investigating polar ice, early version   The cryobot probe would melt it's way through the polar ice. A tether-like "reel" would enable the probe to send back science data. The probe would have the ability to manuever around obstructions - in other words, it can move in more directions than "down".

A Mars lander would deploy a cryobot. The cryobot would then melt it's way down through the ice and perform science investigations. The lander could be either solar or nuclear-powered. Studying the polar stratigraphy of Mars could reveal a lot about the past climate.
